Named Preemie-Test, the device, similar to a digital thermometer, about 15 centimeters long, estimates the age at birth by analyzing the maturity of the newborn’s skin. It does this by shining a beam of LED (light-emitting diode) light onto the sole of the baby’s foot. The measurement of light reflection \u2013 when it returns to the device \u2013 reveals the age of the child.<\/p>\n
